Among her duties at The MED, Towns oversees the development of the hospital?s strategic plan and manages marketing and communications, community engagement, the Traumatic Brain Injury program, government relations and pastoral care.
Hometown: Memphis
Education and work experience: Undergraduate degree, Tennessee State University; graduate degree, University of Alabama at Birmingham. Senior health care administrator since 1993.

What talent do you wish you had? I wish that I could sing.
Who has had the greatest influence on you? So many people have had great influences on me: my family; extended family; spiritual leaders; and current and former bosses. I am inspired by those who have worked hard to open doors for me and others, served as mentors and given me a chance.
How did you become involved with Southern College of Optometry? SCO?s work was familiar to me in part because of their involvement in the medical district. Like Regional Medical Center at Memphis, SCO is committed to improving our patients? health and making an impact on the local community, so being nominated to serve on SCO?s board of trustees was a good match.
What are the immediate goals/plans of the SCO board? My first meeting is in January, but I already know that SCO is actively working to enhance its stature as one of the nation?s top optometry schools. From constructing its new academic facility to looking for new partnerships to help even more patients in Memphis, SCO?s board is supportive of strengthening the college?s presence in Memphis, and that benefits the entire community.
What do you most enjoy about your work? Being able to make a difference in the lives of the patients we serve and the people we employ. I love motivating and encouraging people.
If you could give one piece of advice to young people, what would it be? Take advantage of every opportunity presented, learn from your experiences, remain humble and always be willing to give back.
Marla Brown has joined Agape Child & Family Services as the director of the Families in Transition program. Brown has more than 12 years? experience in program management, most recently with the Shelby County government, where she was responsible for the oversight and fiscal management of several federal grant-funded programs.
