Toddler Dies of Flu; Sister Fights Cancer

Emily Lastinger, a wide-eyed toddler with a cherubic smile, had been sick with the flu for three days, but neither her parents nor her doctor were terribly worried.

"It was so weird: She would spike a fever and be really sick for a few hours, then she would bounce back and be hungry and want a Popsicle and run around a bit," said her father, Joe Lastinger, a 40-year-old health care executive from Colleyville, Texas.

But on Super Bowl Sunday in 2004, she began vomiting and her condition suddenly worsened.

"It was a really rough night," said Lastinger, who stayed up with the 3-year-old because his wife was pregnant, ready to deliver their fourth child.

On Monday morning, the toddler had a long shower and was sitting in bed watching cartoons. They had a doctor's appointment at noon.

"I was doing emails and I heard my wife start screaming upstairs," said Lastinger. "She had stopped breathing."

He started CPR and his wife called 911. Emily was rushed to the hospital and pumped with medicine in intensive care, but there was nothing more doctors could do. She had suffered brain damage and died that night.

"How could it possibly happen?" Lastinger and his wife asked themselves. "Honestly, you worry about your kid being struck by lightning at pool, you worry about car accidents or should they go on a trampoline or a car seat -- those kinds of things, but not the flu."

Learn more about the flu at the ABCNews.com Cold and Flu page.

Both Lastinger and his wife had gotten flu shots that winter. But at 3, Emily fell outside the recommended age group -- then only children 6 months to 2 years old.

Two years later, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) would broaden its guidelines to recommend vaccination for all children, not just those at risk, up to the age of 5.

"Emily was normal and healthy, and that's the thing," said Lastinger. "They weren't recommending vaccine for kids who were normal. ... Meanwhile healthy kids were sick and dying."

Today, thanks to efforts of parent support groups like the one Lastinger co-founded, Families Fighting Flu, the CDC recommends universal immunization from the age of 6 months.

In 2004, the CDC expanded vaccine guidelines up to age 59 months. In 2006, it was recommended through age 18. And in 2010, it voted for universal vaccination over the age of 6 months.

"We applauded it, though it came slowly from our perspective," said Lastinger. "We certainly feel like had they been in place, we would have followed them, our pediatrician would have followed them and our daughter would be alive today."

An estimated 100 otherwise healthy children die of the flu each year and about 20,000 under the age of 5 are hospitalized. Influenza kills anywhere between 3,000 and 49,000 adults annually, as well, according to the CDC.

"Children under 6 months of age have not been studied yet. Therefore, the flu vaccines are not licensed for use in that tender age group," said Dr. William Schaffner, chairman of the department of preventive medicine at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine.

"To protect them, we rely on mother's vaccination during pregnancy -- protection passes through the placenta into the baby -- as well as all contacts of the baby being vaccinated," Schaffner said.

Children under the age of 9 who get the flu shot for the first time need two immunizations in either a shot or nasal spray, to get maximum protection, "which puts a lot of responsibility on the parents," Schaffner said.

Getting just one shot is not enough, as the Moise family of Kansas City, Mo., learned.

Ian Moise died of complications from influenza A in 2003. The family's 7-month-old baby had only gotten the first of two recommended flu vaccine doses before it fell ill two weeks later.

Under 9, Child Gets 2 Flu Shots

"I vowed to tell our story to as many people as possible so that they will take the flu seriously," said Moise, a 41-year-old flight attendant. "We pray that no else has to go through what we go through every day."

Denise Palmer of Lakeland, Fla., lost her 15-month-old daughter Breanne to the flu.

"There is nothing worse than losing a child," said Palmer, 34. "You can't describe it."

As Christmas approaches, Palmer worries more than ever about her family -- an 8-year-old son and now another daughter, only two months old. Breanne died Dec. 23, 2003.

"This time of year freaks me out, and now we have a little one," Palmer said.

The family was visiting relatives in Maryland when Breanne developed a fever and, soon afterward, had trouble breathing. By the time they reached the hospital, the baby's temperature was 107 degrees.

"It happened really fast," said Palmer. "They worked to get her temperature down and said she needed more intensive care and transferred her to another hospital. When she got there, they told us she needed to be put on life support."

After airlifting Breanne to yet another hospital, doctors told the family there was nothing more they could do for the little girl.

Breanne never got her recommended flu shot because she had been sick with an ear infection.

"She had just finished a course of antibiotics the day before we left," said Palmer. "There was no time to get a shot. I sit there and wish I had been able to protect her."

Now, the entire family gets their flu shots every year. The baby gets her protection through Palmer's antibodies.

"We are very in tune with the recommendations," she said. "And with the new baby, we have a rule that anybody who has not gotten the flu vaccine cannot visit her. So it's their choice: If they don't get it, they don't get to see the baby."

As for the Lastingers, they welcomed a baby daughter just after Emily died.

"It was surreal," he said. "It turned out to be a good thing -- not right away, but it was helpful to have something to focus on other than ourselves."

Today, their daughter, Alea, is 8. Her older brothers, Chris and Andrew, are 16 and 14, respectively.

"We vaccinate them all," said Lastinger. "We've never missed a year."

But in a weird twist of fate, Alea was diagnosed with leukemia in 2007, at 3, the same age as Emily when she died. She underwent a grueling chemotherapy regimen and, as a result, vaccination became even more important.

"We had to live with someone who was severely immune compromised," said Lastinger. "It really hit home how important it is to protect yourself, to protect other people."

Today, Alea is in remission and "doing great," according to her father.

Even that ordeal seemed less daunting than the flu, according to Lastinger.

"For us, we can fight the cancer," he said. "We have the power to influence what we're doing."

As for Emily's senseless death from flu, "It was the hardest thing we ever had to go through," said Lastinger. "I cannot imagine anything being worse."

Senators push Obama to propose clean gasoline rules

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A group of Democratic senators on Thursday will urge the Obama administration to propose rules to cut smog-forming emissions from gasoline, regulations opposed by many Republicans.

The lawmakers, led by Senator Kirsten Gillibrand from New York, want the Environmental Protection Agency to propose rules that would slash the sulfur content in gasoline this year and to finalize them next year.

"Tier 3 will substantially reduce harmful pollutants that are responsible for health-related ailments such as heart attacks, premature death, asthma attacks and other chronic lung diseases," Gillibrand, a member of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, said in a letter obtained by Reuters that will be sent to President Barack Obama later on Thursday.

The rules, which had been expected to be proposed early in 2012, would require the sulfur content of gasoline to be cut to 10 parts per million, down from the current 30 ppm standard. Republican lawmakers have opposed the rules saying they would add costs to refiners and put jobs at risk.

The American Petroleum Institute, the main energy industry lobbying group, has said the rules could increase operating costs for refiners by up to 9 cents a gallon.

Ed Whitfield, a Republican from Kentucky in the House of Representatives, introduced a bill this year to stop the EPA from issuing the rules.

The EPA, however, has testified before Congress the price of cleaner gasoline would be closer to a penny a gallon, and even those costs would be greatly surpassed by savings in healthcare bills from reductions in lung-harming smog.

The senators quoted in the letter a study released in June by Navigant Consulting that said the rules could reduce health care costs by $5 billion or $6 billion a year by 2020 and double that by 2030.

Stephen Brown a vice president for government affairs at oil refiner Tesoro Corp, was blunt about his company's opinion about the impact of clean air rules on the economy.

"If more EPA regulations created jobs in America, then this administration would be looking at zero percent unemployment instead of the roughly 8 percent level we currently struggle with."

The senators said in the letter the rules would create over 30,000 new jobs over three years for installation and operation of equipment at the nation's oil refineries.

The letter signed by 13 senators include Dick Durbin, a close Obama ally from Illinois, Joe Lieberman, a Connecticut independent who caucuses with Democrats, and Oregon's Jeff Merkley.

A health advocate hoped the pressure would push the clean gasoline rules forward.

"This letter should send a strong signal to EPA and the White House that this should be a high priority, not something stuck in the bowels of the bureaucracy," said Frank O'Donnell, president of Clean Air Watch.

Before the election early this month, the Obama administration delayed several rules on emissions and oil and natural gas operations.

Now, the administration will likely roll out rules, many of which have been required by court orders, analysts say.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - One month after superstorm Sandy, Gov. Andrew Cuomo says New Yorkers are recovering well, with one notable exception.

WCBS 880?s Marla Diamond On The Story

?We?re getting many, many complaints from people who say ?We have insurance coverage, but we can?t contact the insurance company. We cant get adjusters to show up at the property,?? Cuomo said Thursday.

Cuomo has ordered insurance companies to follow up on claims within six days or be fined $1,000 per case.

?Frankly, this is a health and safety issue and people need heat on and they need the electricity on,? Cuomo said.

He urges homeowners to start work before the adjuster arrives and document everything.

Cuomo also announced today that, at his direction, Department of Financial Services (DFS) Superintendent Benjamin M. Lawsky will continue the moratorium barring insurance companies from cancelling or terminating homeowners? and small business owners? insurance policies in storm stricken areas for any reason, including non-payment of premiums, for an additional 21 days through December 15.

At the governor?s direction, Lawsky launched an online report card system concerning insurance companies who are operating in the areas that were affected by Hurricane Sandy.

Cuomo said this action will hold insurance companies accountable to consumers and allow New Yorkers to see the performance of their insurance company compared to other companies. The report cards will be published on the DFS website and will be frequently updated. They will be available at www.NYInsure.ny.gov.

Among other criteria, insurance companies will be graded on:

? Number of claims and dollar amount of claims
? Average time for an adjuster to inspect
? Number of claims closed with and without payment so far
? Amount of claims paid so far
? Total number of consumer complaints
? Number of complaints as a percentage of number of claims

DFS will be publishing report cards on the following companies:

From ancient scroll to modern cinema: 5G Studio collaborates on theatre design in China

Lobby of the Zendhai Himalayas Cinemas

?China has a remarkable appetite for progressive design,? says architect Mike Voegtle. ?The demographic is young and sophisticated, and they are open to embracing new ideas and taking risks on offerings not seen before.?

During our recent quest for ?Exotic Designs? in our October issue, Voegtle, who is one of five partners of multinational 5G Studio Collaborative, introduced Film Journal International to one of those progressive concepts. Yet, the Zendai Himalayas Cinema in Shanghai is very deeply rooted in ancient tradition.

?Central to the design concept of the cinema is the inspiration drawn from the bustling urbanity scene depicted in a Chinese Song Dynasty hand-scroll painting titled The Riverside Scene at Qing Ming Festival.? 5G Studio?s project description also notes that, in this work, artist Zhang Zeduan (1085-1145) is ?exhibiting the celebration of secular activities and festivities across all levels of society, and across different urban, rural and natural settings.?

Located on the 7th and 8th floors of the mixed-use Zendai Himalayas Center, the 4,000-square-meter (43,000-sq.-ft.), 1,100-seat seven-plex aimed to capture the celebratory tone of the urban setting. ?The design of the cinema sought to absorb, then abstract, and purport to amplify the ideals that shaped its host building,? which was designed by Japanese architect Arata Isozaki and completed in 2010. The insertion of a mezzanine level between the two floors with corresponding stairs and catwalks allowed the site ?to elevate the function of connecting spaces,? as the architects describe it. ?By introducing zones of fast and slow movements, as well as zones of rest and observation [to cinema-goers], they can observe activities on other parts of the cinema and be watched as individual events themselves. The path is a continuous element, terminating in a glass-floored platform, completely identifiable from the arrival lobby, a contemporary, abstracted dragon in the cinema.?

Generally speaking, ?a cinema can be conceptualized as a container,? 5G Studio concluded about Zenadai, and seen as ?a melting pot of individuals coming from an infinite variety of histories seeking to be entertained through movies that attract particular interests.?
The very same could be said about the team behind this and the two other cinemas in Shanghai exclusively presented to our readers on the occasion of CineAsia. ?Between our U.S. offices in Dallas and Atlanta and an office in Ho Chi Minh City serving projects under construction in Vietnam, 5G has over 30 design professionals,? Voegtle confirms. ?Two of our partners are Vietnamese and Indonesian, and we have several designers from various regions across Southeast Asia.?

5G Studio was founded on 5/5/2005 with five partners, who ?have known each other and have been friends for many years,? Voegtle explains about the name. ?We all worked together earlier in our careers at the Beck Group based in Dallas.? While two of the original partners have since left the company, a fourth came on board anew in 2007, before Voegtle ?joined the partnership earlier this year with the merger of DVA Architecture, again making 5G five partners strong.?

Having worked on both conventional theatres and cinema-eateries with DVA, including the likes of Studio Movie Grill, Voegtle now leads 5G?s Entertainment Studio specializing in cinema design. ?With talented individuals from both the U.S. and abroad, we are able to break through cultural barriers and offer a balanced and diverse approach in our design philosophy,? he says. ?Asia is very open to progressive design and Western ideas. Our design work, specifically in the hospitality markets in Vietnam, was a gateway to similar projects back in the U.S. Since our company began as a start-up during the recent economic recession, we were able to first showcase our abilities on large projects overseas.?

Since its inception, ?5G?s primary focus has been on design quality,? Voegtle continues, ?and the notion that efficient and unique design solutions can shape our client?s vision into economical and efficient real estate solutions that maximize their return on investment. We have a very talented and diverse group of architects and designers that focuses on project types ranging from high-end hospitality and multi-family to entertainment and commercial development.?

With hotels and restaurants, spas and churches, interiors, furniture, sustainability and strategic branding all part of the global 5G Studio package, we wondered about the division of labor at the firm. ?All of our design work is produced at our offices in the U.S,? Voegtle confirms, noting that the partners spend a good portion of their time abroad as well. ?Our relationships in China are set up as joint ventures on a project-by-project basis and include companies in Hong Kong and Shanghai,? where 5G is looking to open a design office in 2014.

The cinemas too are the product of a Sino-U.S. partnership. In addition to the Zendai Himalayas (www.5gstudio.com/#/Arch14), the Yonghua Cinema City and Metro Plaza Cinema that 5G has worked on were jointly developed by Kansas City, Kansas-based Entertainment Properties Trust ( FJI, December 2010) and Shanghai Film Group (CineAsia 2005 Exhibitor of the Year).

While they contracted 5G Studio to redesign the lobby of Yonghua Cinema City, an existing flagship location, the firm provided full architecture and interior design services for the Metro Plaza Cinema, a 3,286-square-meter (35,370-sq.-ft.) four-plex located on the fifth floor of the shopping mall of the same name (www.5gstudio.com/#/Arch18). With capacities ranging from 175 to 220 for a total of just over 900 seats, the Metro Plaza was designed and constructed in 2011. Today, the cinema offers ?a retreat for busy shoppers in the form of a voluminous, light-filled space,? 5G noted in the project description. ?The design began with exploring the appeal of the Chinese lantern, attempting to capture its diaphanous essence.? In actuality, the designers linked the two public entries and lined the resulting ?generous? corridor with ?intermittent curtains made of stainless-steel mesh fabric? and custom panels of translucent resin ?in gently angled undulations.?

Backlit by ?color-kinetic? LED lighting whose ?candy-colored? mix is programmed ?in a fluid way, causing unpredictable gradient in the color transition zones,? special emphasis was placed on the entrances to the auditoriums. ?The entries to each cinema occur where the resin panels are interrupted, to reveal a glowing volume that appears to have no edges. Balancing the soft, glowing devices, linear and vibrant planes of light are introduced at strategic points.? That theme was expanded to ticketing and concessions as well. To the designers at 5G Studio, ?the Metro Plaza Cinema elegantly carves spaces by manipulating the materials that make movies possible, artificial light.?

While these concepts are indeed enlightening, our readers may nonetheless have some very practical concerns. After all, the three cinemas in question are constructed on the upper floors of shopping centers. ?More than a trend,? Voegtle thinks their location more likely was the result of the ?cinema development culture? in China. ?Unlike in the States where development is driven by the movie theatre as an anchor, the cinema industry traditionally in China has not been at the forefront of development. Being that ?the shopping mall? is very popular in China and developer-driven, the upper floors became a natural place for the cinema to reside.?

What about ceiling heights and columns? ?Any theatre that has to be designed into an existing structure is going to have its challenges working around structural elements and limitations,? Voegtle concurs. ?Our design process takes into account all of these factors and our design solution is both aesthetic and technical. Every aspect of the theatre is thoroughly studied in three-dimensional models to ensure that the space functions adequately.?

?The lobby look and feel is someone?s first impression of the theatre,? he continues. ?We feel that this first impression, accompanied by clean and clear circulation and branding, will set the tone for the type of moviegoing experience someone will have. This is our first goal as cinema designers. Auditoriums are more technical in nature and solve problems such as good sightlines, comfortable seating, and quality sound and projection.?

As the Chinese exhibition industry ?continues to expand in both the large and second-tier cities across the country,? he says, ?new cinemas are upgrading to large-format screens and are experimenting with VIP amenities such as lounge and bar spaces? 3D films, and newer technologies such as 4D effects and 5D motion seats, are gaining in popularity. And U.S. trends [like] the cinema-eatery or dine-in concept will soon arrive,? Voegtle predicts. The building boom will ?absolutely? go on. ?With film restrictions relaxing and Chinese domestic films now competing with Hollywood standards, the future of cinema and the demand for new theatre technologies and contemporary venues will continue to evolve and grow.?

As architects and designers,? Mike Voegtle concludes, ?we are continuing to push theatre design in a direction to help bring the cinema to the forefront and have it become the catalyst of new development. People have such strong emotions when it comes to cinema and every generation can relate to films that define them. Our job as designers is to make their moviegoing experience memorable and to create a space that sets the scene for those memories to take place.?
