Ummm, woah.. Why do you have so many characters? O.O Anyway, im really sorry to say so what with you being the GM and all, but i think your characters are overpowered.

Sasha: She controls weather, "each and every element", can fly, martial arts, marksmanship...

Romeo: "With greater effort" he can make someone human "for eternity". Skilled in necromancy, hexes, emotion manipulator, enhanced physically, lunakinesis, the list goes on...

Drago: Necromancy, blood manipulation, immortality O.O And of course, healer.

DeAngelo: Able to generate illusions that can "last forever", a version of invisibility, dream manipulation, mind weaving....

Well yeah :/

EDIT: With that being said, it would be rather difficult to find unique and different powers for the newer characters. And each power should come with a limit (the distance it can be used, side-effects, how long it lasts, etc). There should be certain boundaries set like the amount of powers per character.. Yeahh, you get what I mean.

As mentioned before, the RolePlay is a carry-on from a previous one. Everyone had multiple characters and started dropping like flies.

Sasha: She's Mother Nature. She flies via wind lift. Martial Arts and Marksmanship - A girl gets bored after the first eighty years.
Romeo: -Magick binding, Necromancy, Hexes, Curses, Fear Manipulation. All Dark Magick. You know. The class that he teaches...? He can't teach his Circe wards how to use the Dark Magick they have adeptness for if he only knows some by theory. Romeo, while one of if not the most powerful character in the RolePlay, does not actively use his powers and hardly ever does. He will show the students how to do something and then expect them to take care of themselves.

All of the Professors are generally OP. People who are centuries old tend to learn as they go on and practice. So, yeah. They end up pretty strong.

Drago: Necromancy is something that the Circe wards learn from Romeo. Its black magick. Which he teaches. He's not immortal, but as you can see, the CS is in first person and as far as he knows or thinks, he is immortal simply because since the accident, he hasn't aged past what he appears now. And he can only heal that which he inflicts. He can't just walk into St. Jude's and cure all the kids there. So if he didn't put it on you, you're SoL.

DeAngelo: His powers are all mind-based.

The issue (as I perceive) with most GMs is that they freak out when characters seem to be all powerful, but I don't. I look at the past of that particular player and then trust them to handle that power wisely. I don't mind OP characters so long as the player knows that they can't go around like a T-Rex destroying everything in their path just because they can. There's always super powerful characters in novels, so why should it be different in RolePlays? I'm not afraid to cut the ropes on a character that starts to get out of hand. Of course, there will be a warning given beforehand. But I trust that if a player makes a particularly powerful character, they will use it wisely to ensure that the story goes exceptionally well.

Don't worry, I'm not going to be all "I'm Co-GM(BleedingLover is the GM ^^)! I do what I want! I GodMod coz I can! Raaaawr!" I RolePlay responsibly. Should you choose not to take my word for it, so be it. The RolePlay is how the RolePlay is.

For the powers that are a bit autohittish, I always acquire the consent of the corresponding player before doing anything. I.E. DeAngelo isn't going to read Phoenix's mind unless I acquire permission first.

RolePlaying is a game of trust. Trust that your fellow authors will work together with yourself and each other to provide optimum story results until the story has reached its end.

@Littlefox Haha alright then, Il let that slide if you put it that way. By the way let me double check. Romeo, Sasha, Drago and DeAngelo are all the Professors right? Got a little confused there. Would be nice if you put a little marker or a Professor list in the roleplay info.

How To Combine The Powers Of Social Media & Product Creation ...

building your own business is one of those things where the total influence it has mainly rests on other factors.

Would you like to make a product in a specific niche? We are going to help you do this with this article. People that are willing to put forth the effort will be able to profit by creating these types of products. Understand that these opportunities need to be acted upon. As an affiliate, you will get access to millions of different products that you can sell. With so many niches to choose from (including sub niches and micro-niches) it will not be hard to find a product to sell. The following ideas are just for one class or category of people ? professional workers.

One of the great uses of social media for web marketers is lead generation. What you do for a company or simply marketing your already existing business helps to make use of that fact. What you will do is make some email lists in the niches of your choice. It will take some time to build them but you should have something of substance within a couple of months. Then you can start hosting webinars as an expert knowledge series and invite the people on your list. So now you have webinar audios that you can use in a variety of ways. They?re great for list building as well as bonuses for your affiliate products. Then there is product creation which can make very good use of the audios, too. For this idea you should be comfortable talking to people and experts in your field. Obviously the idea isn?t new but you will be able to take the approach of creating a specialty in expert webinars. You can choose between working with local experts or people who operate outside of your immediate vicinity. To create a product of your own there is more than enough material in a couple of expert webinars. Or, as was mentioned earlier, you can use that content in a number of ways in your marketing. You might think that this is too much work but the truth is that it honestly isn?t.

I hope what you will have been reading in the article in relation to business marketing, and likewise also the info?? about online business, is helpful to you. Now please continue on?? some more so you can get supplemental details to do with this topic.

We have talked about focusing on newbies in the niches of your choice, so now we will will talk about marketing to them. There are many ways to attack this, but for now we just want to mention hosting newbie webinars. This particular method is very profitable for many online marketers to target newbies all the time. You need a webinar, and of course, newbies to attend it. Newbies are very susceptible to simple marketing tactics. Just provide them with great information that they need to have. Be sure that the information is correct and usable, otherwise, if you don?t deliver on your promises, this could backfire on you.

In the end, those that do well with online marketing have an open mind, are willing to face challenges, and also go after their dreams no matter how bold they may be. It?s all pretty simple ? just create a product, and promote it on social media websites. It?s not that hard! It really doesn?t matter if you fail at first, even 10 times in a row. As long as you keep trying, and learn from your mistakes, you will win in the end.

Discus fish are very intelligent fish ~ Deal with pets

Discus fish are very intelligent fish and have very distinct personalities, and the discus fish seems to normally recognize its caretaker and will respond with a display of affection when you enter the room.?You can even feed a discus fish right out of your hand!?In this article I will be going through a few things to consider when caring for your own discus fish, and also some things you can expect out of your new pet.

The first thing you need to do when starting up your own discus fish tank is to pick out an appropriate aquarium for them.?It is always a good idea to purchase the biggest aquarium you can afford.

Having a larger aquarium will allow you to have a bit more leeway when it comes to environmental conditions.?A larger aquarium will generally tend to be a bit more stable then the smaller ones.?After you get your aquarium you will need to pick out the appropriate filters and equipment for your setup.?Make sure to check for your discus fish's specific requirements and adjust accordingly for your aquarium.

Discus fish are a bit harder to care for then other species of freshwater fish, and are not typically recommend for the beginning aquarium enthusiast.?Discus fish tend to be more of a schooling fish and do best when kept in an aquarium with plenty of same species companions.?Also you should provide plenty of cover in the form of driftwood and rocks for your discus fish.

Discus fish also require water temperatures to be around 84 to 86 degrees Fahrenheit for best results.?For feeding, you should feed your discus fish a steady diet of frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, and typical sinking pellets.?When your discus fish are young, you should feed them at least 3 times a day.?As your fish get older you can cut back feeding to once a day.?Avoid overfeeding your discus fish as it can cause them to be obese and pose health problems.

Once you get the hang of your discus fish, you can start to breed them.?Discus fish are very loving parents, with both of the parents playing an active role in their fry's life.?It is truly a sight to behold, seeing your discus fish swimming around with their very own offspring and I highly recommend you try and breed your discus fish when you are comfortable in your ability to provide adequate care for them.

I hope you have found this article helpful in considering owning and taking care of your very own discus fish.?There are many more in-depth guides around the web that can go more into detail about the various aspects of providing care.?I have just tried to give you a brief overview of a couple things to consider.?As always, if you are still stuck up on some unanswered questions about discus fish, you can always contact a friendly sales representative to answer any questions you may have.

Nathan Daniel: A December To Remember....

This has truly been an amazing month, filled with the love of friends, family and the Spirit of Christmas.? It was?our first Christmas in our new home and we certainly spent a great deal of time time decking the halls!

We began our Christmas season with?a gingerbread house and?tree decorating party!? We had so much?fun kicking off the season with?a few?friends and family.?

?Everyone?helped decorate our 10'?white pine tree ~ it was certain?done with?lots of 'spirits' and Christmas love.

The finished product was simply gorgeous!

?

?After we?eat pizza?and finished the Christmas tree, it was time to decorate the gingerbread houses and trains with the kids.? If you've ever embarked on this type of holiday tradition, you know how much children reaaly enjoy this type of project.? Who doesn't love frosting, tons of different candy and being able to use your creative juices to construct your own Christmas palace!?

Unfortunately, Nathan didn't have a nap, so?he fell fast asleep before the gingerbread decorating began, but we saved him lots of supplies to work on his very own Christmas train.

This very well may be incorporated into our annual Christmas cookie exchange cocktail party next year, so everyone can partake in the fun - together.????

Brunch with Santa at McGrievy's in Waterford has become a tradition in our home?for the?past two?years, since Nathan now knows who Ho Ho is.? This year, we were blessed to enjoy our morning with Nathan's cousin Lily and her little friend, Alex.? The food was great and the kids had a great time?visiting with Santa and receiving their first gift of the season.??

Our next Christmas adventure featured?hot chocolate and?the Polar Express!!?Nathan is such a huge fan of trains, this was a must-do activity again this year.?We went on the Polar Express in Utica last year, but were less than thrilled?with the long drive (3-hours round trip), long train ride (2-hours) and?cold chocolate rather than hot, so this year?had to be different.??For the second season in a row, the Polar Express is offered in Saratoga, which is super close to home and last year I was unable to purchase tickets because I waited to long.? Not this year.? Although, I waited long enough that we were only able to buy dome seats for a Thursday evening,?but I wanted those seats becasue?it's?like sitting in a booth at?a restaurant rather than a regular train seat.? If you are taking this train, buy the dome seats,?so worth it, but hard to get, so purchase your tickets early!

We had a great time on this train!? We brought pizza?and enjoyed dinner on the train.? Our fellow passengers were wondering where their pizza was and the conductor said, we were the second family he saw bring a pizza on the train!?It was dinner-time and the kids needed to eat! :-)??We played holiday trivia, read stories, sang Christmas carols (jingle bells - Nathan's favorite Christmas song),?drank hot and delicious coco?served in our very own Polar Express mugs, ate?a yummy sugar cookie with sprinkles, visited the North Pole and had a wonderful visit from Santa and his elf, Snowflake!??Saratoga does it right!? Althoug, I'm not one bit surprised.??We will certainly do this again next year and dome seats are a must!? I've already put a reminder in my?2013 calendar, so we can order them early and get a weekend date.

Our next Christmas adventure was our annual?Christmas party with my side of the family.? We usually rotate homes and this year?we offered our home and planned a really fun day!? We?began with a family card game tradition?~?three/thirteen (it's sort of like rummy).??Every adult in?our family knows how to play this game because we played it a lot?growing up, so we thought it would be super fun to?play as adults while the kids made some?fun?Christmas projects with Miss Cole.?
?

When it comes to Christmas projects, I really try to choose?something?meaningful -?that we'll enjoy for years to come.? I'm really proud of this years' selections!!? We made hand print?snowman Christmas tree ornaments,?paper snowflakes?in memory of the?Sandy Hook Elementary victims and hand print?Rudolf the reindeer hats.

These ornaments were super easy and turned out absolutely adorable!? With just some red and green Christmas balls, white fabric paint and markers and you have yourself a personalized keepsake?ornament.? The kid's hands are painted with?white fabric paint and then they grasp the?ornament, leaving behind?their hand print, which is used to make the snowmen.? Thank you Miss Cole for all your work on these ornaments?~ we love them!!??

?

The next project was: Snowflakes for?Sandy Hook.? The elementary school's PTA is constructing a Winter Wonderland at the school for the children's return?on January 12th, and they've asked people to make paper snowflakes to hang everywhere in the school, so it looks like a winter wonderland and?because no two snowflakes are alike.

We even asked the adults to make a snowflake and they?came out awesome!? My 80+ year old?grandmother?even made a snowflake for the children.?

These snowflakes will be?mailed tomorrow.

Our final festivities began on the night before Christmas with Aunt Sandy and family, who were able to schedule?a special visit from the oh-so-busy Santa himself!? ??

After we left Aunt Sandy's, we had to get everything ready for Santa to come down?our chimney,?including test driving the merchandise!? :-)

Christmas?day was super fun and Nathan had a great time opening and enjoying his gifts and spending time with family.

?We certainly had a December to remember and are looking forward to bringing in the new year,? especially considering a certain little someone is about to turn five years old!!!? I can't believe it!

Stay tuned....

Exploration of healthcare workers'perceptions on occupational risk of HIV transmission at the University of Gondar Hospital, Northwest Ethiopia

??Exploration of healthcare workers'perceptions on occupational risk of HIV transmission at the University of Gondar Hospital, Northwest Ethiopia

HIV/AIDS has several means of transmission. Exposure to blood and other body fluids is a very important means of transmission.

Healthcare workers are exposed to this disease mainly due to the nature of their work. This is an exploration of the perceptions of healthcare workers of the University of Gondar Hospital.

Methods: Based on purposive sampling seven healthcare workers were selected from different departments in the hospital so that they could reflect on their perceptions.

The selected healthcare workers were asked about the risks related to their work, their experience of HIV related hazards and their general views on the transmission of HIV. The main themes were identified for analysis and the views were summarized under the themes.

Results: All the respondents were aware of the risk of acquiring HIV in healthcare settings.

Some had experienced accidents that made them take post-exposure prophylaxis, and most witnessed accidents like needle-stick injuries to their colleagues. They also expressed their feelings that their workplace was not the best place to work at.

Conclusion: Health professionals are well aware of the possibility of HIV transmission associated with their practice.

Accidents like needle stick injuries are apparently common; and at the same time, the practice of healthcare workers towards using universal precautions looks poor.

Google removed more than 50 million links in 2012 search crackdown over piracy claims

Google, the Internet search leader, removed more than 50 million links from search results this year for allegedly infringing the intellectual property of copyright holders.

According to an analysis of Google's weekly "transparency reports" performed by TorrentFreak editor ErnestoVan Der Sar, 51.5 million links to web pages allegedly infringing on copyrighted material were removed from search results in 2012.

"Nearly all of these web pages are no longer showing up in Google's search results," Van Der Sar reported.

Google, like any other website on the Internet, is obliged by federal law -- namely, the Digital Millennium Copyright Act -- to take down content when it receives a DCMA request from a copyright holder.

Van Der Sar noted that DCMA takedown activity has been increasing throughout the year, hitting a high point last week when Google received 3.5 million requests.

Google

Much of that takedown activity is being fueled by automated systems used by large copyright holders. Those systems can be wildly inaccurate, which can lead to lawsuits.

For example, an online storage service called Hotfile sued Warner Bros. Entertainment after that company's automated system flooded Hotfile with thousands of DCMA takedown requests for material Warner had no rights to.

Under the DMCA, any person making bad takedown requests can be penalised with monetary damages. Warner's defence in the Hotfile case is a person didn't make the bogus requests. A computer did.

Media companies, like Warner, are among the most prolific requesters of takedowns.

The biggest requester in 2012, Van Der Sar points out, was the Recording Industry Association of America, which asked Google to remove more than 7.8 million links from its search results.

The website most frequently targeted by rights holders was FilesTube, according to the TorrentFreak editor. More than 2.2 million links at that site allegedly infringed on copyrights, he noted.

"While this is certainly a significant number, it?s less than 1 percent of all FilesTube pages indexed by Google," he wrote.

Copyright holders aren't the only entities pressuring Google to remove links from search results.Governments do so, too. More than half those requests are made for concerns over defamation or privacy and security.

However, governments are interested in more than just taking down links from the Internet. They're also interested in obtaining information from Google that it has about its users. That trend, too, increased over 2012.

Horse Coaching Requires Persistent Patience ? Sports and ...

If you?ve been riding horses for a while, you?ll probably have experienced the actual joy of riding a horse that?s remarkably highly trained. But did you ever give thought to the amounts of time and energy, and probably money, spent on making that pony that way?

You can?t train a horse in a day, a week or a month, I?d go so far as to say a year, because so far as I am concerned , coaching is an everlasting process. It takes amazing patience and persistence.

When coaching a horse, it is essentially a battle between your patience and the horse?s resistance. If you show implacable patience, you?ll come out the winner. If you lose patience and snap on any particular day, you lost that day?s battle. Lose too many battles and you?ll land up losing the war. Handling horses is like handling youngsters. Anger and disappointment only inflame bad circumstances. Annoyance has no role to play in training or handling a horse, and demonstration of annoyance is a conclusive no-no. Loud remonstrations, cursing and physical action are among the seven deadly sins.

If you cannot accept the unshakable fact that there is no alternative choice to patience, you?ve no business coaching horses. My apologies, but that?s the blunt truth. Each shortcut you take today is a failure waiting to happen along the way some other day. Like most kids, horses learn only through continual repetition. And like with kids, some horses need a load more repetition than other horses.

If you come across any books or videos or audios that guarantee to show you exactly how to teach your pony everything it needs to be taught in one hour, a day or a month, you want to burn that baloney. The single thing you achieve with super fast teaching techniques is disaster. Your pony isn?t designed by nature to be a genius, so don?t try and make him one. When he learns at his very own pace, he learns for life. When he learns at a turbocharged pace, he learns for an hour, or perhaps a day. It is irrelevant that you take days to show him something that to you seems to be the easiest thing in the world to learn. You are not a horse, and your horse is not you. Start every day with your horse brightly, and make sure it ends brightly. If you happen to feel anger building up over something, take the day off and do something, anything that has nothing to do with horses. Tomorrow will always dawn fresh.

As vital as patience is persistence is. Your horse is not going to learn consistently if you?re not teaching him consistently.

For all the undeniable fact that it could take a lot of time, horse training is not a difficult task. The most important challenge is finding the patience needed. Any person who tells you that horse coaching is a difficult task is either too lazy to try it himself, or has screwed up by using shortcuts. Malicious manipulation of whips, bits and spurs will only bring about a rebellious horse, and the more the punishment, the more the defiance.

Orange County Register Owner Eyes Tribune Papers

SANTA ANA, Calif. ? The publisher of the Orange County Register said Thursday that at an investor group he leads may want to buy Tribune Co.'s newspapers after the media conglomerate emerges from bankruptcy.

"We clearly have the means and the team by which to look seriously at the Tribune papers and, from the outside, they may very well have enough of the elements that we're looking for," said Aaron Kushner, chief executive of 2100 Trust LLC, which bought Freedom Communications Inc. and its flagship paper, the Register, in July.

Tribune, which is expected to leave bankruptcy protection soon, owns the Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times, Baltimore Sun and five other daily newspapers. The Chicago-based conglomerate also operates 23 television stations.

Kushner cautioned that he hasn't examined Tribune's finances but signaled he would move quickly if he determined its newspapers are a good fit.

"I think it's a pretty small group that potentially could fit our model," he said in an interview.

Kushner, who is also Freedom Communications' CEO, has overseen the hiring of dozens of journalists and a major expansion of the print edition of the Register, the nation's 20th-largest newspaper by circulation and a direct competitor of the Los Angeles Times. Freedom Communications is the 39-year-old's first foray in newspapers after he flirted with buying The Boston Globe and newspapers in Maine.

Tribune filed for bankruptcy protection in December 2008, less than a year after a debt-laden buyout engineered by Sam Zell. Its new owners include JPMorgan Chase & Co., debt specialist Angelo, Gordon & Co., and hedge fund Oaktree Capital Management.

Kushner said he expects the Tribune's new owners would sell the newspapers in a single package.

"There's a tremendous amount of infrastructure that's shared among the newspapers, and they have been together, with the exception of the LA Times, for a long time," Kushner said. "Disassembling them in an auction sort of a way or a process may be achievable, but our sense is it would end up resulting in significantly less for the current owners of the Tribune Co."

Freedom recently sold The Gazette in Colorado Springs, Colo. Kushner signaled he was open to selling Freedom's five smaller newspapers in California and Arizona.

"We wouldn't have bought them if we didn't love them. That said, if we find that there is an owner that can do an even better job than us with them, we'll talk with them," he said.

Cheers! Alcohol and Your Metabolism: New Year's Eve | BostInno

As Ultimate Bootcampers, we have a work hard, play hard mentally. We enjoy a challenging bootcamp workout, but we also love to gather with friends and ring in the New Year with a few cocktails. We know you?ll indulge a little bit next week, but we wanted to share the truth about how alcohol really affects your metabolism, so you can keep it in mind when you are trying to achieve your New Year?s resolutions and healthy living goals in 2013.

Here it is: Alcohol significantly sloooooows down (we?re talking turtle slow, inch worm slow) your body?s normal metabolic process.

How Alcohol Slows your Metabolism

The metabolic process is your body?s act of turning food and drink into other compounds that, ultimately, our body uses for energy. Throwing a wrench into your metabolism like alcohol means your body can?t absorb the proper energy source it needs for day to day functions.

While you might not feel the effect a couple glasses of wine has on your everyday functions, you will absolutely feel the lack of effort your body gives to you during an intense boot camp workout. I?m talking increased shortness of breathe, legs that feel like 1 ton boulders and arms that laugh at you when attempting bicep curls. Wait, I think I just described a typical boot camp workout without alcohol?make it a 2 ton boulder. ;o)

A standard drink is defined as 12 ounces of beer, 5 ounces of wine, or 1.5 ounces of 80-proof distilled spirits. Each standard drink contains a similar amount of alcohol. This alcohol prevents the proper processing of vitamins and minerals which are needed in the natural metabolic functions. Without the vitamins and minerals, energy production is reduced.

Also hindered ? by even just a small amount of alcohol ? is the ability of your body to bring on lipid oxidation (the burning of fats), according to the American Journal of Clinical Research.

How alcohol contributes to weight gain

Alcohol contains almost TWICE the amount of calories per gram (7 calories per gram) than proteins and carbohydrates. This is one of the reasons why it contributes to weight gain ? even if you?re working out regularly.

Plus, research has shown a 20% increase in calories consumed at a meal when alcohol was consumed before the meal. So, that often means that healthy summer salad you just ordered might turn into a salad + bread & oil + dessert + an extra drink or two. In studies, people who drank alcohol with their meals consumed a total of 33% more calories!

So if you?re really looking to lose weight or fit into a smaller dress or pant size in the New Year, kicking alcohol to the curb could help speed up the process ? and your metabolism.

At Ultimate Bootcamp, we want to help you achieve your fitness goals in 2013! We are giving participants that commit to 8 weeks of Ultimate Bootcamp workouts $100 cash back at the end of their experience. We?ll be there to motivate you along the way and help you get the results you want. With each workout burning 500-700 calories, you?ll be sure to see a difference in your fitness level at the end of your 8 weeks!

China forces real-name telecoms registration ? RT

Chinese telecommunication companies will require ID from their customers before installing a landline, selling a mobile phone service contract or giving access to the internet. Critics call the new rules an assault on freedom of speech.

The real-name registration rule was passed Friday by the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, China?s top legislative body. The 12-article document also set rules on how the companies have to manage the personal data of their customers, their responsibility for illegal use of the information and the way who governmental regulators and the customers can oversee it, reports Xinhua news agency.

It also specifically forbids sending any business-related messages to phones or personal emails without owner consent, which is meant to curb spamming.

The move is meant to "ensure internet information security, safeguard the lawful rights and interests of citizens, legal entities or other organizations and safeguard national security and social public interests," the decision says.

The regulation did not require subscribers to use real names when posting information online.

The regulation would help the country address the rapid development of technology and fight against online scams, fraud, identity theft and libel, Li Fei, deputy director of the Commission for Legislative Affairs of the committee explained to the media earlier this week, when the draft document was under consideration.

Critics see the new rules as an attempt by the Chinese authorities to restrict online freedoms and discourage potential whistleblowers from anonymously reporting abuses online.

Chinese government encourages use of internet for areas like business and education, but is cautious about information which it views as a potential threat to public good. It censors the net from politically sensitive messages and restricts access to some services that puts information flow out of the governmental control.

Back in January China instructed the country?s most popular microblogging service, Sina Weibo, to request its users to provide their real names. This was meant to curb spread of harmful rumors among its 400-million-strong user base. The company reported in May that it had problems implementing real-name registration due to technical difficulties and reluctance of the users.

British actress Kate Winslet marries for third time

LONDON (Reuters) - British Oscar-winning actress Kate Winslet has married for the third time, her publicist confirmed on Thursday.

The 37-year-old, best known for her starring role in the 1997 blockbuster "Titanic", married Ned RocknRoll, a nephew of music and aviation tycoon Richard Branson.

The private ceremony was attended by Winslet's two children from previous marriages and "a very few friends and family", according to the publicist, and took place in New York earlier this month.

"The couple had been engaged since the summer," Winslet's spokeswoman said in a statement.

Winslet has been nominated for six Academy Awards and won once for her lead role in "The Reader".

Her other notable performances include Iris Murdoch in "Iris", Clementine Kruczynski in "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" and April in "Revolutionary Road".

That film was directed by Sam Mendes, whom Winslet wed in 2003 and divorced seven years later. Her first marriage was to Jim Threapleton, which lasted from 1998 to 2001.

According to online reports, RocknRoll had his name changed by deed poll from Ned Abel Smith and is an executive for Branson's space flight venture Virgin Galactic.

The Sun newspaper said the New York wedding was so secret that even the couple's parents did not know about it.

Hollywood actor Leonardo DiCaprio, who co-starred with Winslet in Titanic and Revolutionary Road, gave her away, the newspaper said.

Cholesterol drug shows promise in fighting effects of malaria

Dec. 27, 2012 ? Researchers have discovered that adding lovastatin, a widely used cholesterol-lowering drug, to traditional antimalarial treatment decreases neuroinflammation and protects against cognitive impairment in a mouse model of cerebral malaria. Although there are differences between mouse models of cerebral malaria and human disease, these new findings indicate that statins are worthy of consideration in clinical trials of cerebral malaria, according to an article published in the Dec. 27 issue of PLOS Pathogens.

Malaria, a parasitic infection that is transmitted to humans by the female Anopheles mosquito, is one of the leading infectious diseases worldwide. Cerebral malaria is a severe, potentially fatal neurologic complication of infection by the parasite Plasmodium falciparum. Studies of children with cerebral malaria show that cognitive deficits, such as impaired memory, learning, language, and mathematical abilities, persist in many survivors long after the infection itself is cured.

"Over 500,000 children develop cerebral malaria each year in sub-Saharan Africa, and persistent cognitive dysfunction in survivors is not only a major public health concern, but also a significant socioeconomic burden," says Guy Zimmerman M.D., associate chair for research in the Department of Medicine at the University of Utah and senior co-author on the study. "There is an urgent and unmet medical need for therapies that treat or prevent cognitive impairment in cerebral malaria."

Statins, a class of drugs best known for their ability to lower cholesterol, have also been shown to be active in modulating a variety of immune system responses. In their research, Zimmerman and his Brazilian colleagues evaluated the effect of statins in a mouse model of cerebral malaria. The researchers found that adding a drug called lovastatin to traditional antimalarial therapy prevented cognitive dysfunction in mice infected with cerebral malaria. They discovered that addition of lovastatin decreased white blood cell accumulation and leakiness in blood vessels in the brain. Lovastatin also reduced production of damaging oxygen-containing molecules and other factors that promote inflammation.

"The molecular mechanisms that give rise to cerebral malaria and subsequent cognitive dysfunction are not yet known," says Zimmerman. "However, the fact that statin treatment decreases both injurious blood vessel inflammation and cognitive dysfunction suggests that a combination of vascular and inflammatory triggers leads to cerebral pathology and intellectual deficits."

Zimmerman and his colleagues also studied lovastatin in an experimental model of bacterial sepsis, a severe whole-body inflammatory state that can also lead to cognitive impairment. They found that lovastatin also prevented cognitive impairment after bacterial sepsis.

"Our findings are exciting because the clinical implications extend beyond cerebral malaria to other severe systemic inflammatory syndromes complicated by brain involvement," says Zimmerman. "We believe our observations are the first experimental evidence to support the possibility of using statins to reduce cognitive impairment in critically ill patients."

This study is the latest result of a long-term collaboration between Zimmerman and Dr. Hugo Castro-Faria-Neto and his group at the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation, a Brazilian research institute dedicated to the study, prevention, and treatment of infectious diseases. This collaboration began when Dr. Castro-Faria-Neto was a visiting scientist at the University of Utah. Future research will focus on additional investigation into the molecular mechanisms of cerebral malaria and the responses of key immune cells to malaria toxins, as well as on studies of the systemic inflammatory component of malaria in human patients.
