102-Year-Old Car Lover Receives College Scholarship & More ...

At the lovely age of 102, car lover Margaret Dunning is planning another exciting adventure: She
plans to head back to school in order to obtain her business degree. Dunning, who once attended
the University of Michigan but had to drop out more than 80 years ago, will be taking tests and
working on homework once again.

The Awards

During a ceremony on September 26th, Dunning was presented with an award granting her free
tuition at the University of Michigan along with free car care products that she can receive
for the rest of her life. The FRAM Group, who manufacturers various automotive parts and
car care products, decided to award Dunning because they loved reading about her article on
TODAY.com, in which she discusses her love for fine automobiles and how she still she the oil
and spark plugs by herself.

Dunning has been all over the news lately because of how well she takes care of her 82-year-
old 1930 Packard 740 Roadster. She also owns and takes care of a variety of additional classic
automobiles.

Growing Up

Dunning grew up on a farm just west of Detroit, growing potatoes and milking cows, first
learned to drive when she was just 8 years old, and finally received her license at the young age
of 12.

Once high school was over in 1929, Dunning enrolled at the University of Michigan in order to
get her degree in business. However, the Depression soon hit and she had to drop out in order to
help her mother, who was the owner of a bank. Dunning soon went into banking and never went
back to school.

Back To School

Despite Dunning living a very successful life in both the banking and retail sectors, she still feels
overwhelming amounts of excitement when she thinks about returning to school. As she has
said, she is not quite sure about what exactly she wants to study but she does know that it will be
something business related. She currently runs a trust fund of her own.

Because of Dunning?s ?lifelong love of cars,? the FRAM Group is more than happy to provide
her with both tuition and automotive products to ensure that all of her classic cars are kept in top
shape. Besides maintenance, Dunning still drives too, and has been for 90 years now.

Although Dunning has not yet enrolled in any classes, she is already planning her drive from
Detroit to University of Michigan?s campus and should have her completed degree in a little over
a year?s time.

For some women, genes may influence pressure to be thin

Genetics may make some women more vulnerable to the pressure of being thin, a study published in the International Journal of Eating Disorders has found. From size-zero models to airbrushed film stars, thinness is portrayed as equaling beauty across Western culture, and it's an ideal often cited as a cause of eating disorder symptoms in young women.

The researchers focused on the potential psychological impact of women buying into this perceived ideal of thinness. Changes in self-perception and behavior, caused by this idealization, can lead to body dissatisfaction, a preoccupation with weight and other symptoms of eating disorders.

"We're all bombarded daily with messages extoling the virtues of being thin, yet intriguingly only some women develop what we term thin ideal internalization," said Jessica Suisman, lead author on the study and a researcher at Michigan State University (MSU). "This suggests that genetic factors may make some women more susceptible to this pressure than others."

To explore the role of genetic factors in whether women "buy in" to the pressure to be thin, the idealization of thinness was studied in sets of twins. More than 300 female twins from the MSU Twin Registry, ages 12-22, took part in the study. The team measured how much participants wanted to look like people from movies, TV and magazines. Once the levels of thin idealization were assessed, identical twins who share 100 percent of their genes were compared with fraternal twins who share 50 percent.

The results show that identical twins have closer levels of thin idealization than fraternal twins, which suggests a significant role for genetics. Further analysis shows that the heritability of thin idealization is 43 percent, meaning that almost half of the reason women differ in their idealization of thinness can be explained by differences in their genetic make-up.

In addition to the role of genes, findings showed that influences of the environment are also important. The results showed that differences between twins' environments have a greater role in the development of thin ideal internalization than wider cultural attitudes, which women throughout Western societies are exposed to.

"We were surprised to find that shared environmental factors, such as exposure to the same media, did not have as big an impact as expected," Suisman said. "Instead, non-shared factors that make co-twins different from each other had the greatest impact."

Although the study did not look at specific environmental triggers, non-shared environmental influences typically include experiences that twins do not share with one another. This could include involvement by one twin in a weight-focused sport like dance, one twin being exposed to more media that promotes thinness than the other, or one of the twins having a friendship group that places importance on weight.

"The broad cultural risk factors that we thought were most influential in the development of thin-ideal internalization are not as important as genetic risk and environmental risk factors that are specific and unique to each twin," said Suisman. Kelly Klump, MSU professor of psychology and co-author on the study, said it is well established that a broad range of factors can contribute to the development of eating disorders.

"This study reveals the need to take a similar approach to the ways in which women buy in to pressure to be thin, by considering how both genetic and environmental factors contribute to the development of thin-ideal internalization," Klump concluded.

Ingredients

  • 110 g sliced button mushrooms
  • 1 bag fresh tagliatelle pasta
  • 300 g tub creme fraiche
  • 1 olive oil
  • 110 g cheddar cheese
  • lettuce
  • coriander
  • cherry tomatoes
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves of garlic, chopped

Step 1: Boil the Pasta, Start the Sauce

Fill a pan with water and bring to the boil, add the fresh tagliatelle. Take a shallow pan, heat some olive oil and add the mushrooms, the chopped onion and 2 cloves of chopped garlic. Cook for 2-5 minutes until the vegetables turn translucent.

Step 2: Add the Cream

Add the creme fraiche and cheddar cheese. Stir well. When cooked, drain the pasta and mix in with the sauce. Serve on top of a bed of lettuce and cherry tomatoes.

'Superweeds' linked to rising herbicide use in GM crops, study finds

ScienceDaily (Oct. 2, 2012) ? A study published this week by Washington State University research professor Charles Benbrook finds that the use of herbicides in the production of three genetically modified herbicide-tolerant crops -- cotton, soybeans and corn -- has actually increased.

This counterintuitive finding is based on an exhaustive analysis of publicly available data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Agriculture Statistics Service. Benbrook's analysis is the first peer-reviewed, published estimate of the impacts of genetically engineered (GE) herbicide-resistant (HT) crops on pesticide use.

In the study, which appeared in the open-access, peer-reviewed journal Environmental Sciences Europe, Benbrook writes that the emergence and spread of glyphosate-resistant weeds is strongly correlated with the upward trajectory in herbicide use. Marketed as Roundup and other trade names, glyphosate is a broad-spectrum systemic herbicide used to kill weeds. Approximately 95 percent of soybean and cotton acres, and more than 85 percent of corn, are planted to varieties genetically modified to be herbicide resistant.

"Resistant weeds have become a major problem for many farmers reliant on GE crops, and they are now driving up the volume of herbicide needed each year by about 25 percent," Benbrook said.

The annual increase in the herbicides required to deal with tougher-to-control weeds on cropland planted to GE cultivars has grown from 1.5 million pounds in 1999 to about 90 million pounds in 2011.

Herbicide-tolerant crops worked extremely well in the first few years of use, Benbrook's analysis shows, but over-reliance may have led to shifts in weed communities and the spread of resistant weeds that force farmers to increase herbicide application rates (especially glyphosate), spray more often and add new herbicides that work through an alternate mode of action into their spray programs.

Its routine FCC appearance from a few months back hinted that it would be officially launching sooner rather than later -- and today, our dear friends, marks the day the GBook formally joins the Archos Arnova family. The 7-inch, Ice Cream Sandwich tablet / eReader likely won't excite many with its run-of-the-mill spec sheet, which consists of a 1GHz Cortex A8 CPU, 1GB RAM, 4GB of built-in storage, 1080p video playback and a meek screen resolution of 800 x 480.
