More Tips For Feeding The Family, Hurricane Edition

Our readers were buzzing with ideas after yesterday's post on keeping the family well-fed during Hurricane Sandy-related power outages. What topped their list of topics? Egg safety, coffee preparedness, and what to do with pantry goods.

So we thought we'd round up some of the best of your suggestions, plus a few new tips, as we plow through Day 2 of the storm.

Early on yesterday, Salt reader Lari Robling of Philadelphia tweeted her pre-storm priorities: "Grind your coffee beans while you have power. Give that hand can opener a good cleaning ? bacteria thrives in those crevices."

Robling knows hand can openers. She's the brains behind Endangered Recipes, a book and website dedicated to tapping our grandmothers' forgotten recipes, and she works on a healthy food project for member station WHYY called Fit. She tells us storms remind her that in many parts of the world, hauling water and makeshift cooking are the norm.

Many other readers agree that the hand can opener is a storm cook's best friend ? for eating beans, tuna, and evaporated milk right out of the can. Crackers, bread and cold cereal are your pairings with these items right now.

And Robling has more ideas on what to unearth from the pantry:

"I always have buttermilk powder and egg white powder in my pantry. They are shelf stable and good not just for emergencies but for when you just don't feel like going out to the store if a recipe you want to do calls for them. Also, canned evaporated milk in the 5-ounce cans. It substitutes for cream in soups and if you melt some cheese it is a decent cheese sauce and mixed with cooked pasta is a decent mac and cheese substitute."

Of course if you have a gas stove or a gas grill outside and it's safe enough to go out, you can cook just about anything on it, as reader Dave Baldwin noted in the comments yesterday. "You don't have as much control, so you have to raise/lower pots to get the temperature right, but it works. You can even bake, in a Dutch oven, although again you don't have anywhere near the control you would in your nice gas range," he wrote. Just be careful about keeping the cooking area well-ventilated.

Other options readers suggest include sterno cans and chafing dishes, but we'd recommend against cooking raw meat on them. You might want to keep a thermometer handy and remember to ventilate if you're considering breaking them out. And check out the video below of how to set up a sterno and portable stove.

For the Boy Scouts among us, our pals over at Serious Eats did a round up a couple of years back about sternos, butane burners, and survivalist camp stoves. And former Gourmet editor Ruth Reichl tweets that she's using her fireplace to fry eggs this morning.

As your frozen items start defrosting, think soup, many readers tell us. And invite the neighbors over to use up leftovers or have a group cookout, once you can go outside safely.

Whether you get outside or you're stuck inside for awhile, lots of us are going to have to throw out some food after the storm. There's no way around it if the power's off for several hours or days (see this list to keep everything as safe as possible).

But one of the more heartbreaking issues new moms face during power outages like this one that can last for days includes losing frozen breastmilk. Over at the San Diego Breastfeeding Center, they report that breastmilk can stay safe in a full freezer once the power's out for 48 hours, sometimes more, plus they have some helpful tips on storing it longer.

Speaking of longer storage, a few of you weighed in on the eggs issue. In yesterday's post, we listed eggs among the perishables to use up, in addition to milk. While the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention considers eggs perishable, folks in other countries sometimes store them in the cupboard.

Anna Vigren reports on the science that shows eggs are pretty disease resistant and that there's no need to store eggs in the fridge unless they're known to have been laid by a hen infected with Salmonella. Cook them thoroughly, in any case.

And if you're still stuck at home with kids and there's power and pantry items aplenty, here's Food 52's list of projects like soft pretzels and peanut butter cookies.

Apple Cans Scott Forstall Over Maps, Retail Chief Out As Well ...

Apple announced a big company-wide reorganization at the upper level late Monday. The shakeup saw the company let go of two execs ? Scott Forstall and John Browett, and it also saw others given more responsibilities in Cupertino.

?Apple today announced executive management changes that will encourage even more collaboration between the Company?s world-class hardware, software and services teams. As part of these changes, Jony Ive, Bob Mansfield, Eddy Cue and Craig Federighi will add more responsibilities to their roles. Apple also announced that Scott Forstall will be leaving Apple next year and will serve as an advisor to CEO Tim Cook in the interim,? said a press release.

Apple doesn?t giver any additional information on what led to Forstall?s ousting. But the mobile software head and 15-year veteran of the company is said to have left due to a scuffle over Apple?s failed Maps product launch. The Wall Street Journal reports that Forstall was asked to exit his role after he refused to sign an apology for the problems with Apple?s recently-launched Maps product. The New York Times also says that this incident was the catalyst for his departure, but also adds that tensions had been brewing for some time.

Apple also ousted newer hire John Browett, saying ?a search for a new head of Retail is underway and in the interim, the Retail team will report directly to Tim Cook.?

One of the big stories from this management shakeup is the rise of Jony Ive. As part of the stated changes, Ive will now head all of Apple?s product design.

Here?s what Apple had to say in a press release:

?Jony Ive will provide leadership and direction for Human Interface (HI) across the company in addition to his role as the leader of Industrial Design. His incredible design aesthetic has been the driving force behind the look and feel of Apple?s products for more than a decade.?

You probably know Ive best from his role as product walkthrough guy in all of those Apple videos you see for various new products (recently the iPhone 5 and the iPad mini).

Others like Eddy Cue, Craig Federighi, and Bob Mansfield will also take on bigger roles.

Iran orchestra finale rings of hard-line pressure

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) ? It was a VIP audience for what was likely the last performance of the venerable Tehran Symphony Orchestra. Watching from the front row in late August was Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in what was seen as an endorsement from the ruling theocracy, which once tried to stamp out all music as a violation of Islamic values.

Just two months later, the musicians are out of work, funding has run dry and a nearly 80-year-old institution that survived wars, coups and the 1979 Islamic Revolution was declared Tuesday in an apparently irreversible "coma" by media.

The apparent tipping point was financial. It could be counted as collateral damage from Western sanctions that have left Iran's economy so stressed that authorities are considering banning exports of staples such as rice and wheat in order to boost emergency stockpiles.

"We are currently facing a financial drought," Parliament speaker Ali Larijani told a group of officials Monday. "We will have a more difficult year ahead."

The full story of the orchestra's demise likely runs deeper. In a time of escalating showdowns with the West over Iran's suspect nuclear program, the opposition of Iran's clerical leadership toward anything deemed as too Western is gaining strength.

"Musicians have had no support in recent years," said Saba Radman, a music journalist and critic. "They feel very disillusioned."

The Tehran orchestra ? by far the oldest and biggest of several concert hall-style ensembles in Iran ? was often an easy target of hard-liners because of its roots during the era of the Western-backed monarchy toppled by the Islamic Revolution. During its heyday in the 1960s and 70s, it hosted performances by world famous musicians such as violin virtuoso Yehudi Menuhin.

The orchestra fell further from favor during a European tour after the riots triggered by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's disputed re-election in 2009. Opposition supporters in Europe used the concerts as forums to denounce Iran's ruling system and flash the green wrist bands and scarves that symbolized the protest movement.

Meanwhile, Islamic conservatives ? including forces within the powerful Revolutionary Guard ? have reclaimed influence since the widespread crackdowns on reformists and can even exert muscle over Supreme Leader Khamenei. Cultural groups outside direct state control, such as the Tehran orchestra, have often come under suspicion as potential liberal-leaning havens. In January, authorities closed down the House of Cinema, an independent film group that operated for 20 years.

"Many concerts have been canceled by local authorities over the past years, but the Culture Ministry raised no objections," said Radman.

Hamid Shahabadi, the deputy culture minister in charge of artistic affairs, acknowledged some delays in payments for musicians while insisting that the orchestra has not been disbanded, but he indicated that its musicians need to look for work elsewhere.

He suggested some could be absorbed into a planned state-run institution that would oversee all remaining orchestras. Those concentrate heavily on traditional Persian music.

Iran's Islamic authorities tried to ban all music in the early years of the Islamic Revolution, claiming it violated strict Muslim tenets. The clerics eventually relented, but, as recently as 2005, Ahmadinejad tried unsuccessfully to outlaw Western music on state-run television and radio.

At the same time, the Tehran Orchestra performed Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 ? drawing criticism from some conservatives because the piece was associated with liberals and secular groups during the early years of the Islamic Revolution.

A year later, it brought more grimaces from Islamic authorities for its program in Germany that included Tchaikovsky's Overture to "Romeo and Juliet" and Beethoven's Seventh Symphony ? with a snippet of "Dog Breath Variations" by American rock impresario Frank Zappa slipped in.

In late August, the orchestra may have played its last piece ? the Iranian national anthem ? at the opening of the Nonaligned Movement summit, which Iranian officials billed as a world gathering to challenge the economic pressures of the West over Tehran's nuclear program.

Orchestra members told the semiofficial ILNA news agency Monday that they have not rehearsed together or been paid for three months. An experienced musician may receive just 6 million rials, or less than $200 a month at the current exchange rates ? below an average taxi driver's pay ? and must supplement income through other performances or professions.

"Many (Iranian) artists are working as taxi drivers, office secretaries and accountants" rather than focusing on their profession, singer Fazel Jamshidi was quoted by the semiofficial Mehr news agency.

Arsalan Kamkar, a violinist in the orchestra, told The Associated Press on Monday that "only seven or eight members of the orchestra have valid contracts. Unfortunately, the rest have not had contracts over the past months, and it seems unlikely their contracts will be extended."

Kamkar said the shutdown highlights the dislike for Western-oriented culture by Iran's rulers, who are also sitting on one of the world's prized collections of European and American modern art.

In August, the Museum of Contemporary Art displayed about 100 works purchased by the late shah and his family ? including pieces by Andy Warhol, David Hockney and Jasper Johns. But most of the collection ? works by Picasso, Jackson Pollock, Francis Bacon and many others ? remains in vaults and basement storage.

Smith's 'fantastic game' helps 49ers carve up Cards

Quarterback completes 18 of 19 and defense stones Arizona for 24-3 victory

The 49ers' Michael Crabtree avoids the Cardinals' William Gay on Monday night in Glendale, Ariz.

updated 11:32 p.m. ET Oct. 29, 2012

GLENDALE, Ariz. - Three touchdown passes, one incomplete pass.

Not a bad night for Alex Smith, and it could have been better, considering that the one incomplete pass was dropped by a wide-open receiver.

The San Francisco quarterback completed 18 of 19 passes for 232 yards and three touchdowns ? two to Michael Crabtree and one to Randy Moss ? to help San Francisco flatten the Arizona Cardinals 24-3 on Monday night.

"Eighteen of 19, I have never seen that," 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh said. "How important for your quarterback to play very well? It is very important and I don't know how you play much better. It was a fantastic game by him."

Arizona defensive tackle Darnell Dockett could hardly believe what Smith had done.

"Everyone's surprised. My 5-year-old son's surprised," Dockett said, "but at the end of the day it wasn't like he had to make the long perfect throws. He had some guys open and we missed some tackles and they made plays."

Smith said he had no idea his stats were that good.

"Which is a good thing," he said. "I don't want to think about my stats or incompletions or anything like that. I was kind of in a good rhythm, the whole offense was. "

Smith has withstood more than his share of criticism he was the No. 1 overall pick in the draft in 2005. He was not interested in calling this a statement performance.

"At this point I don't care," he said. "if you ask me a few years ago, yeah maybe, but at this point I don't really care. I am concerned about winning. The guys in the locker room know what I am about and that is what really matters."

As for reports he had lost his confidence, Smith said, "It was in my closet. I found it."

Smith was 14 of 15 for 146 yards and two touchdowns, both to Crabtree, as the 49ers built a 17-0 halftime lead.

Moss caught a 47-yard TD pass, dodging tacklers down the sideline on a play that seemed to turn back the clock to the receiver's prime. With the catch, he tied Terrell Owens for fourth on the NFL career touchdown list with 156.

Smith, who tied a career high with the three touchdown passes, spread out his completions to 10 receivers. Crabtree led the way with five catches for 72 yards.

Arizona's defense, supposed to be the team's strength, missed tackle after tackle in an embarrassing nationally televised performance at home. The 24 points were the most allowed by the Cardinals this season.

"This was a big test for us, and everyone saw how it went," Arizona coach Ken Whisenhunt said. "It was disappointing to say the least."

Quarterback John Skelton called the loss "embarrassing" and "humiliating."

Led by Smith's near-perfect precision passing, the 49ers methodically dominated from the start. He had the best completion percentage of his career, and he would have been perfect had Delanie Walker not dropped the ball when he was wide open on a crossing route in the first half.

A 10-play, 77-yard drive that consumed just over 6 minutes of the first quarter put San Francisco up 7-0. On third-and-goal from the 3, Smith threw a sidelines pass to Crabtree, who outfought Patrick Peterson for the ball and the touchdown.

A flurry missed tackles, most notably an open-field whiff by Sam Acho, helped Ted Ginn Jr. return a punt 35 yards to the Arizona 45 in the second quarter. Daryl Washington sacked Smith to help set up a third-and-23 from the Arizona 46. But Smith found Crabtree over the middle for 22 yards, just a yard shy of the first down. David Akers' 43 yard field goal made it 10-0 with 5:58 left in the half.

Crabtree beat Peterson again for San Francisco's second touchdown. Smith threw over the middle to the receiver, who caught the ball, then fooled Peterson with an inside move into the end zone to make it 17-0 with 1:41 left in the half. The 49ers drove 68 yards in eight plays, again overcoming a sack, this one by Calais Campbell, that made it second-and-goal from the 16. Smith threw 7 yards to Mario Manningham to set up the TD toss to Crabtree.

The Cardinals were booed off the field by the home crowd at the half.

Things didn't get any better for the home team in the third quarter. On third-and-9, Smith threw 30 yards to Crabtree, who evaded a host of tacklers. Then on third-and-8, Smith tossed a short pass to Moss, who sidestepped a series of would-be defenders all the way to the end zone, putting San Francisco ahead 24-0 with 7:27 left in the third quarter.

The Cardinals averted a shutout with Jay Feely's 28-yard field goal

John Skelton, making his second start since Kevin Kolb went down with rib injuries, completed 32 of 52 passes for 290 yards, often overthrowing receivers. The Cardinals rushed for just 7 yards in nine attempts against the 49ers, who entered the game as the No. 1-ranked defense in the NFL, No. 2 against the run.

Arizona's final possession ended when Larry Fitzgerald was stopped at the 1.

Notes: The roof was open at University of Phoenix Stadium, a rarity for Cardinals games. ... San Francisco C Daniel Kilgore left the game in the first quarter with a concussion. ... Washington had two sacks, giving him eight for the season. ... In its two nationally televised night appearances this season, against St. Louis on a Thursday and San Francisco on Monday, Arizona was outscored 41-6. ... The 49ers improved to 3-1 on the road, winning their last two away from home by a combined 55-3. ... Only Jerry Rice (208), Emmitt Smith (175) and LaDainian Tomlinson (162) have more touchdowns than Moss. ... Justin Smith had two of San Francisco's four sacks. ... The 49ers have a bye this week. The Cardinals are at Green Bay on Sunday.

Inside USD | Cropper Writers Series: Opportunity for Discovery

Wednesday, October 31, 2012

It?s the ninth year of the Lindsay J. Cropper Memorial Writers Series at the University of San Diego, but when a noted published literary writer or poet comes to campus to showcase their work, English Assistant Professor Halina Duraj wants it to be an opportunity for discovery.

?We always want our speaker to interact well with the students, be engaging with the audience and be a high-quality writer,? Duraj stated, ?but I like to show them that poetry can come from a wide range of places. I think Kevin?s going to expand our students? minds, showing them that poetry can come from elements of blues, from jazz, it can be personal or political.?

Duraj is talking about Kevin Young, the Atticus Haygood Professor of Creative Writing and English and curator of literary collections and the Raymond Danowski Poetry Library at Emory (Ga.) University. Young (pictured) is the featured guest for the Nov. 2 event, starting at 7 p.m. in USD?s Manchester Executive Conference Center Auditorium. The event is free to attend, open to the public and will be followed by a dessert reception and book signing in the auditorium foyer.

Prior to Friday night?s appearance, Young will also speak with students in USD Lecturer/Poet Adam O. Davis? English 391 Intermediate Poetry workshop course.

The 42-year-old Young?s body of work impressively delves deep into African American music, particularly the blues, to communicate the history of Black America.

His poetry books include Ardency: A Chronicle of the Amistad Rebels, Dear Darkness and For the Confederate Dead. Other works are Black Maria: Poems Produced and Directed by Kevin Young; To Repel Ghosts: Five Sides in B Minor, Jelly Roll: A Blues and The Art of Losing: Poems of Grief and Healing. His poetry and essays have appeared in The New Yorker, New York Times Book Review, Paris Review, Kenyon Review and Callaloo. Among his awards are the 1993 National Poetry Series winner, the John C. Zacharis First Book Award for Ploughshares and the Graywolf Press Nonfiction Prize winner for 2012?s The Grey Album. Young has also held three fellowships: the Stegner Fellowship in Poetry at Stanford University; the Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship and the MacDowell Colony Fellowship.

Young?s resume is long on experience and recognition, yet when he stands at podium on Friday to share selections of his prose aloud, Duraj hopes students can also envision themselves in this spot.

?I want them to say to themselves, ?I can do this. He?s just a human being, this is normal and this is something he does,?? she said. ?But I also want students to have an admiration for how much actual work goes into what these writers do, how they craft it. They have to sit down and, through their hard work, just do it.?

Young?s appearance is the final Cropper series event for the Fall 2012 semester. The series returns March 15 for its spring event with two featured speakers, also at 7 p.m. in the Manchester auditorium. Fiction writer Lynn Freed, author of six novels, a collection of short stories and essays, will appear along with veteran San Diego-based poet Ben Doller. Duraj said the spring event speakers have also agreed to be judges for a USD student creative writing contest that?s open to all students who?ve taken at least one creative writing course.

Duraj said that student interest in USD?s creative writing program is on the rise. The Cropper Writers Series is one outlet, along with English Department courses that emphasize creative writing, and, in May and October of this year, student writers have given short presentations of their own original work.

?It seems like every day a student comes into to my office to ask about the creative writing program,? Duraj said. ?The students abuzz with excitement. There?s definitely a hunger for it here.?

How to make stem cells - nuclear reprogramming moves a step forward

Monday, October 29, 2012

The idea of taking a mature cell and removing its identity (nuclear reprogramming) so that it can then become any kind of cell, holds great promise for repairing damaged tissue or replacing bone marrow after chemotherapy. Hot on the heels of his recent Nobel prize Dr John B. Gurdon has published today in BioMed Central's open access journal Epigenetics & Chromatin research showing that histone H3.3 deposited by the histone-interacting protein HIRA is a key step in reverting nuclei to a pluripotent type, capable of being any one of many cell types.

All of an individual's cells have the same DNA, yet these cells become programmed, as the organism matures, into different types such as heart, or lung or brain. To achieve this different genes are more or less permanently switched off in each cell lineage. As an embryo grows, after a certain number of divisions, it is no longer possible for cells which have gone down the pathway to become something else. For example heart cells cannot be converted into lung tissue, and muscle cells cannot form bone.

One way to reprogram DNA is to transfer the nucleus of a mature cell into an unfertilized egg. Proteins and other factors inside the egg alter the DNA switching some genes on and other off until it resembles the DNA of a pluripotent cell. However there seem to be some difficulties with this method in completely wiping the cell's 'memory'.

One of the mechanisms regulating the activation of genes is chromatin and in particular histones. DNA is wrapped around histones and alteration in how the DNA is wound changes which genes are available to the cell. In order to understand how nuclear reprogramming works Dr Gurdon's team transplanted a mouse nucleus into a frog oocyte (Xenopus laevis). They added fluorescently tagged histones by microinjection, so that they could see where in the cell and nucleus the these histones collected.

Prof Gurdon explained, "Using real-time microscopy it became apparent that from 10 hours onwards H3.3 (the histone involved with active genes) expressed in the oocyte became incorporated into the transplanted nucleus. When we looked in detail at the gene Oct4, which is known to be involved in making cells pluripotent, we found that H3.3 was incorporated into Oct4, and that this coincided with the onset of transcription from the gene." Prof Gurdon's team also found that Hira, a protein required to incorporate H3.3 into chromatin, was also required for nuclear reprogramming.

Dr Steven Henikoff, from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, commented, "Manipulating the H3.3 pathway may provide a way to completely wipe a cell's 'memory' and produce a truly pluripotent cell. Half a century after showing that cells can be reprogrammed this research provides a link to the work of Shinya Yamanaka (who shared the prize), and suggests that chromatin is a sticking point preventing artificially induced reprogramming being used routinely in the clinic."

Migraine in children may affect school performance

ScienceDaily (Oct. 29, 2012) ? Children with migraine are more likely to have below average school performance than kids who do not have headaches, according to new research published in the October 30, 2012, print issue of Neurology?, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology.

The study of 5,671 Brazilian children ages 5 to 12 found that those with migraine were 30 percent more likely to have below average school performance than those with no headaches.

"Studies have looked at the burden of migraine for adolescents, but less work has been done to determine the effect of migraine on younger children," said study author Marcelo E. Bigal, MD, PhD, of Merck & Co. in Whitehouse Station, New Jersey, and a member of the American Academy of Neurology.

For the study, the students' teachers provided information on students' performance that was the same information provided to educational boards. Teachers also completed a validated questionnaire screening for emotional and behavioral problems and interviewed parents with a questionnaire covering medical history, headaches and other information.

The study found that 0.6 percent of the children had chronic migraine, or migraine on 15 or more days per month, 9 percent had episodic migraine, and 17.6 percent had probable migraine, which meant they met all but one of the criteria for migraine and did not meet the full criteria for any other type of headache syndrome.

The link between migraine and poor performance in school was even stronger for children with migraines that were more severe, lasted longer, or for children with chronic migraine, as well as for those who also had emotional or behavioral problems.

"With approximately one-fourth of school-age children having headaches with migraine features, this is a serious problem, especially for those with frequent, severe attacks that do not subside quickly," Bigal said. "Parents and teachers need to take these headaches seriously and make sure children get appropriate medical attention and treatment."

Dangling crane swinging in storm winds

NEW YORK (Reuters) - New York City evacuated neighbors of a nearly completed, 90-story luxury apartment building on Monday after the top of a construction crane collapsed in high winds, prompting fears the crane's boom could crash to the ground.

With the city bracing for massive storm Sandy, which made landfall in southern New Jersey later on Monday, the crane's upper arm dangled over the street near Central Park from what should eventually become the city's tallest residential building, where condominium units will start at $16.75 million.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg said the crane had been inspected on Friday, as other construction cranes had ahead of the storm, and that the cause of the accident remained unknown. Engineers went to the top of the building to examine the crane but stopped short of attempting any repairs, officials said.

"It's conceivable that nobody did anything wrong whatsoever and it wasn't even a malfunction, it was just a strange gust of wind," Bloomberg told a news conference.

"Just because it was inspected, that doesn't mean that God doesn't do things or that metal doesn't fail. There's no reason to think at this point in time that the inspection wasn't adequate," he said.

Firefighters closed streets for several blocks surrounding the site, evacuated 300 apartments in three buildings and were preparing to evacuate more, a Fire Department spokesman said.

Passers-by stared in amazement and apprehension, while some stopped to take pictures of the building that will feature $90 million duplexes.

"It's fascinating, I saw it on TV and came out to see it. But it's also scary. If it happened there, who knows where else it could happen," said Sam O' Keeffe, 25, a bartender who lives in the neighborhood.

The building, known as One57 and designed by Christian de Portzamparc, has been climbing ever higher and, at 1,004 feet, it will tower over other buildings near Columbus Circle at the southwest corner of Central Park.

Ninety-two luxury condominiums will sit atop a five-star Park Hyatt hotel.

Two of those units were under contract for more than $90 million each, The New York Times reported last month, citing the president of building developer, Extell Development Company.

Extell, which did not respond to requests for comment on Monday, announced in May it had reached $1 billion in sales and that half of its units had sold in six months. Occupancy was set for 2013.

The contractor was Australia's Lend Lease Construction and Canada's Pinnacle Industries own the crane, said Mary Costello, a spokeswoman for Lend Lease.

"We are working with structural engineers and the DOB (Department of Buildings) on evaluating any additional measures that can be taken to secure the boom and crane structure," Costello said.

In April, a 30-year-old laborer died at a subway construction site after the boom of a subway crane came off and crashed down. Yonkers Contracting Co. Inc. was cited with 10 serious violations by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration as a result.

That same month, a Manhattan state judge acquitted a construction company owner of manslaughter for a crane collapse that killed two workers in May 2008 and raised concerns about high-level building projects in New York.

In that case, a nearly 200-foot-tall crane snapped in half and crashed onto a building on the Upper East Side. In March 2008, a giant crane fell and crushed a residential building in Manhattan, killing seven people.

WA Fathers Rights and Non-Custodial Shared Parenting ? Fathers ...

WA Fathers RightsFor those concerned about WA Fathers Rights and equal parentage and access to children by Non-Custodial Mothers, as well as the ability for extended family members in the Non-Custodial family to have an equal impact on kid?s lives, we want you to know that Fathers and Families is working daily to educate and build an organization of ALL Washington State Non-Custodial Families and Parents that help State Legislators and Judges educate themselves on the importance of equally shared parenting. If you are a WA Non-Custodial Father or Mother, we think you already know the difficulties that exist in the family courts that marginalize you to that of a support provider that is kept at a distance rather than an equal parent.? Additionally, in addition to WA Non-Custodial Fathers and Mothers, our organization believes that those in our extended families get equally hurt in this system, and that they are equally important as the custodial family system.

Fathers and Families understands that the majority of Non-Custodial parents are Fathers, and it is easy to think about this as a WA Fathers Rights issue, but we like to think of this issue from the rights of the child to have love, support, and guidance from BOTH parents without government or court interference. For far too long, many ?Women?s Rights? groups have attempted to frame this as an issue as one that only affects women, and we feel that they have lost sight on what is really important, which is the children. Furthermore, we want to make it painfully obvious that many WOMEN in non-custodial paternal families get just as devastated in this process. Therefore, in this article, and from the standpoint of Fathers and Families, we substitute the phrase ?WA Fathers Rights? for the right of children to have equal parents that share parentage.

Additionally, if the advancement of ?Women?s Rights? has come at the expense of the Washington State Father, then we think that talking about the Rights of WA Fathers will have the same effect on Non-Custodial Mothers. If the divisive system is bad for Fathers, then it is equally bad for Mothers who are kept from their children by Judges and bad laws.

Factors influencing Non-Custodial WA Fathers Rights, Non-Custodial Mothers, and the ability for children to have two equal parents.

  • Child Support Enforcement ? While most Washington State residents think that child support enforcement is simply a federal program that ONLY has the duty to support children, there is a another side to this program that is generating money for WA State Welfare and Low Income Assistance Programs. Our organization believes this relationship NEEDS a marginalized parent to support children from afar via the federal government so that programs like TANF and WIC can continue to receive federal and state funding.
  • Well established ?Women?s Rights? groups that flourished in the 1960s and 70s, and who have tens of thousands of supporters that have the ear of Washington State Judges and Legislators. Typically, these groups oppose any type of ?Fathers Rights? or Equally Shared Parenting. This is why Fathers and Families thinks that it is important that WOMEN in non-custodial families stand up to the notion that this only hurts women when they lose custody.
  • The WA State Family Courts have become an industry where many people profit when two parents are fighting for 18 years. Clearly, WA State Family Law Attorneys benefit from this by charging excessive retainers many times a year for 18 years and therefore have an incentive for conflict.
  • If you are a WA Father who is concerned about his right to have equal parentage and access to his children (or a Non-Custodial Mother), then you have likely heard a lot of Judges and Politicians talk about purposeful absent fathers. But what about the large numbers of Fathers who are forced into absence by Judges who only give 4 days a month visitation, or who allow custodial parents to move hundreds of miles away?
  • As non-custodial step-parent, grandmother, or aunt, are you tired of watching the Non-Custodial Father or Mother go to jail when they have a hard time financially, while WA State Social Services programs provide expanding housing, educational, medical, food, and financial assistance to custodial parents make the same financial ends meet?
  • As a Washington State Non-Custodial Father or Mother concerned about your rights in the family courts, have you ever wondered why the federal government provides the custodial parent with a free attorney to resolve child support issues while you are forced into bankruptcy in hiring a private attorney EACH time enforcement wants more money?

Clearly there is a lot of work to be done in Washington State when its comes to Fathers Rights and the Rights of Non-Custodial parents to have equal parentage and access to their children.

Fathers and Families

Fathers and Families believes that far greater resources, opportunities, emotional support, psychological support, financial support, and physical support for children is realized when both parents (and extended families) have equal access and parentage of their children, and that these are things that federal child support enforcement or social services agency can never deliver.
Fathers and Families believes that using WA non-custodial Fathers and Mothers child support efforts as a means to generate federal money for Welfare programs is misguided.

Fathers and Families has concerns that as more and more Welfare applications are received at WA Social Services Agencies and across the US, there will be even more aggressive child support enforcement tactics used in the future that is designed to secure federal money from Title IV-D legislation to pay for these programs. And given the level of immunity that social services agencies have, we believe that a very wide open door exists for abuse and bias on non-custodial Fathers, Mothers, and children.

In an effort to help Fathers and Families educate WA Legislators, Judges, and other groups, we hope that you will join our organization, as well as getting involved with others across this great nation using our social media sites like Facebook where you will have the opportunity to collaborate with us and others who are also in the child support enforcement system. Additionally, we ask that you extensively share this article with others via email and other social networking sites to help bring about greater awareness of the new WA Fathers Rights and Non-Custodial movement called equally shared parenting.

Pearson, Bertelsmann confirm publishing tie-up

LONDON (AP) ? Pearson PLC will merge its Penguin Books division with Random House, which is owned by German media company Bertelsmann, in an all-share deal that will create the world's largest publisher of consumer books.

The planned joint venture brings together classic and best-selling names. As well as publishing books from authors such as John Grisham, Random House scored a major hit this year with "Fifty Shades of Grey." Penguin has a strong backlist, including George Orwell, Jack Kerouac and John Le Carre.

The two companies said Monday that Bertelsmann would own a controlling 53 percent share of the joint venture, which will be known as Penguin Random House.

Bertelsmann would keep full control of Verlagsgruppe Random House, its trade publishing business in Germany, and Pearson would retain the right to use the Penguin brand in education.

The announcement may lay to rest the ambition of Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. of netting Penguin. Reports over the past couple of days have indicated that News Corp. has expressed an interest in buying Penguin for 1 billion pounds ($1.6 billion) in cash. News Corp. owns HarperCollins, another big publishing house.

Under the terms of the deal, Random House worldwide chief executive Markus Dohle will be CEO of the new group while Penguin's CEO John Makinson will be the chairman of its board of directors.

"Together, the two publishers will be able to share a large part of their costs, to invest more for their author and reader constituencies and to be more adventurous in trying new models in this exciting, fast-moving world of digital books and digital readers," said Marjorie Scardino, chief executive of Pearson.

And Bertelsmann's Dohle said the link-up will "create a publishing home that gives employees, authors, agents, and booksellers access to unprecedented resources."

The closing of the deal is scheduled to take place in the second half of 2013 following regulatory approval.

Pearson said the deal does not require approval by shareholders; Bertelsmann is privately owned.

Pearson shares were down 1 percent at 1,209 pence in midmorning trading in London.

The Financial Times, a Pearson publication, reported Monday that News Corp. had approached Pearson "at the highest level" about a possible cash offer for Penguin. The Sunday Times, owned by News Corp., reported that Murdoch was prepared to offer 1 billion pounds in cash.

Pearson declined to comment on the possible interest of News Corp.

In 2011, Random House reported revenues of ?1.7billion ($2.2 billion) and operating profit of ?185 million. Penguin had revenues of 1 billion pounds and an operating profit of 111 million pounds.

Pearson meanwhile reported that its operating profit in the first nine months of the year fell 5 percent although revenue increased by 5 percent. Revenue from Penguin was down 1 percent on a constant currency basis.

The company attributed the profit drop to its sale last year of its half share of FTSE International, a joint venture with the London Stock Exchange.

The Bertelsmann deal is part of Pearson's strategy of focusing more on its education business. Penguin accounts for about 10 percent of the company's book sales.

Lions top Seahawks 28-24 with 20 seconds left

DETROIT (AP) ? The Detroit Lions drafted Titus Young last year, envisioning him as the receiver to eventually replace veteran Nate Burleson.

It has happened sooner than planned, and Young is making the most of his opportunity.

Young caught his second touchdown pass from Matthew Stafford on a 1-yard slant with 20 seconds left, lifting Detroit to a 28-24 win over the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday.

"Matthew trusted me all day, and he gave me a perfect opportunity to make a play at the end," Young said. "I wanted do that for everyone on the team, but I especially wanted to do it for Nate."

Burleson broke his right leg in Monday night's loss at Chicago, pushing Young up the depth chart. Burleson sent a motivational message to his teammates on offense that was shown on video Saturday night.

Young caught a go-ahead TD midway through the second quarter and finished with nine receptions and 100 yards receiving ? both career highs ? in a breakout performance that didn't surprise Detroit coach Jim Schwartz.

"I wasn't worried about Titus," Schwartz said. "Titus has never lacked for self-confidence."

Young needed to make the second TD catch after Zach Miller had a spectacular, 16-yard snag on a toss from Russell Wilson with 5:27 left that put the Seahawks ahead.

But Seattle (4-4) couldn't stop the Lions (3-4) on their last possession.

"We're disappointed that after that terrific drive, we couldn't finish it off the way we wanted to," Seattle coach Pete Carroll said. "We didn't get the stops on third down."

That was a problem for the Seahawks all afternoon, giving up first downs on 12 of 16 third downs on defense, including three on Detroit's last drive.

Stafford led the 16-play possession that started at Detroit's 20 with 5:27 remaining. It began with a 15-yard pass to Calvin Johnson and was kept alive with third-down conversion passes to Johnson in Lions territory, to Joique Bell that set up the winning score from just outside the goal line on another third down.

After Stafford had to throw away two passes to avoid sacks with no timeouts left, Young broke inside of cornerback Brandon Browner and caught the winning TD pass.

"There were four dudes standing next to Calvin and one standing next to Titus, so I liked my odds on that side," Stafford said. "Calvin got a lot of attention all game, just like he always does, but the other guys stepped up. Titus had a huge game, Brandon Pettigrew had a hell of a game, Ryan Broyles made some big plays, and the running backs were coming out of the backfield and making catches.

"That's what we needed."

Stafford threw a winning TD pass with less than a minute left for the second time this year and for the fourth time in four seasons. He has led nine drives ? including three this year ? that led to decisive winning scores in the fourth quarter and overtime during his 36-game career.

"It's easy to be confident in Matt when you are with him every day," Schwartz said. "The talent he has isn't just going to go away."

Stafford was 34 of 49 for 352 yards with three TDs, also connecting with Broyles in the end zone at the end of the first quarter. The quarterback also ran for a 1-yard TD that gave Detroit a lead early in the fourth period for the first time this year.

It looked like the Lions were going to blow it.

Seattle went ahead when Wilson lobbed a pass into the end zone that a leaping Miller tipped to himself with his right hand and hauled in with both hands for the go-ahead TD.

"I knew he'd catch it," Wilson said. "He has unbelievable hands."

Seattle, though, was the team that failed to hold onto the lead and ended up losing consecutive games for the first time this year.

Wilson was 25 of 35 for 236 yards with two TDs and an interception. Marshawn Lynch ran just 12 times for 105 yards, including a career-high 77-yard run early in the second quarter for one of five lead changes in the closely contested game.

Sidney Rice had six receptions for 55 yards and a 9-yard score that put Seattle up 17-7 early in the second quarter.

Young's first score, catching a 46-yard pass in stride from Stafford, started Detroit's comeback on the ensuing possession. His second one sealed the much-needed victory for the Lions.

"Huge win," Detroit defensive end Cliff Avril said. "I'm just glad we pulled it out because 2-5 is a bigger hole than 3-4."

NOTES: Lions S Louis Delmas injured his left knee, which was surgically repaired in August, and left in the third quarter. "It's the same knee, but I don't know that it is the same injury," Schwartz said. "He'll have tests." ... The Lions left starting LB DeAndre Levy (shoulder) and key CB Bill Bentley (ankle) inactive and Seattle was without reserve WR Braylon Edwards and backup DE Jason Jones inactive. The team said Edwards woke up with a swollen knee and the decision to leave him out was made after he tried to go through pregame warm-ups.

Small tsunami waves hit Hawaii after Canada quake

It may not have been a hurricane, but an earthquake and tsunami warning worried state agencies along the West Coast. NBC's Miguel Almaguer reports.

By NBC News staff and news wires

Updated at 6:23 p.m. ET:?Hawaii state officials on Sunday canceled a tsunami advisory prompted by a powerful earthquake off the Canadian coast that sent thousands of people fleeing to higher ground. No major damage was reported.

The advisory was canceled shortly before 4 a.m. local time after the anticipated waves rolled in lower than expected, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center. ??

Kevin Richards, earthquake and tsunami manager for Hawaii State Civil Defense, said water, gas and power lines were not damaged by the smaller-than-expected waves. ? ?

Eugene Tanner / AP

Visitors and Oahu residents watch the water level in the Ala Wai Harbor in Hawaii for the arrival of a tsunami on Saturday.

"Everything is normal,'' Richards said. "We're in good shape with this one.''

Gov. Neil Abercrombie said the Aloha State was lucky to avoid more severe surges.

"We're very, very grateful that we can go home tonight counting our blessings," Abercrombie said.

The tsunami began shortly after 10:30 p.m. Hawaii time (4:30 a.m. ET), according to the ?Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, as motorists clogged roadways in a mass exodus from low-lying areas.?

"The tsunami arrived about when we expected it should," senior geophysicist Gerard Fryer told reporters at a news conference, saying: "I was expecting it to be a little bigger."?

?Officials earlier warned locals to treat the threat as very serious.

"This is?obviously?a very, very dangerous situation," Honolulu Mayor Peter?Carlisle?told?Hawaii News Now?earlier as officials were urging residents to move away from the coastline immediately.?

Fryer said the largest wave in the first 45 minutes of the tsunami was measured in Maui at more than 5 feet -- about 2 feet higher than normal sea levels.? ?

Tsunami warning sirens in the islands were activated on short notice due to initial confusion among scientists about the quake's undersea epicenter and the extent of the tsunami threat posted by the temblor.

Carlisle earlier announced that all police and emergency personnel were being pulled out from potential flood zones shortly before the first wave, leaving anyone defying evacuation orders to fend for themselves. He urged motorists who remained caught in harm's way due to gridlocked roads to abandon their vehicles and proceed on foot.?

"If you are stuck in traffic, you might consider getting out of your car and consider walking to higher ground. You will have to assess your own situation, depending on where you are right now. Right now it is critical," he said.

Scientists convicted for not predicting quake

Abercrombie issued an emergency proclamation for the state.

Canada quake
The warnings followed an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 that hit Canada's Pacific coastal province of British Columbia late on Saturday. The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake was centered 123 miles south-southwest of Prince Rupert at a depth of 6.2 miles.?

Carsten Ginsburg, who lives in the small community of Bella Coola southeast of Prince Rupert, said the quake lasted about 40 seconds.

"It shook everything. The electricity went out, the power lines were swinging all over the place and stuff was falling off the shelves," he said, Canadian Press?reported.

No major damage was reported.

The Earthquakes Canada agency said the quake was followed by dozens of aftershocks, including?a 6.4 magnitude tremor that struck Sunday afternoon.?

On Oahu, Hawaii's most populous island, tsunami warning sirens blared across Honolulu, the state capital, prompting an immediate crush of traffic, with many motorists stopping at service stations to top up with gasoline. At movie theaters, films were halted in mid-screening as announcements were made urging patrons to return to their homes.?

The last time Oahu had a tsunami warning was after the devastating Japanese earthquake of March 2011.?

NBC News' Wilson Rothman, who was staying on the island of?Kauai, said that while there?had been no?noticeable?rise in water levels,?local officials and?hotel staff had taken precautions.?

"Non-essential hotel functions were shut down fast, and restaurants across the island closed early," he said. ?"Our hotel asked all guests to evacuate 'vertically' to the 4th, 5th or 6th floor, and asked guests on those floors to 'make new friends'."

On Honolulu's famed Waikiki Beach, residents of high-rise buildings were told to move to the third floor or higher for safety.?

Stephany Sofos, a resident of Diamond Head near Waikiki, said most people had either evacuated or relocated to a higher floor.?

"I moved my car up the hill, packed up my computer and have my animals all packed and with me," Sofos said, saying that she had not yet seen any obvious receding of the surf, a telltale sign that a tsunami wave is imminent.?

"I'm pretty confident because we have a lot of reefs out there and that will prevent any major damage. Maybe it's a false confidence, but I'm not really worried," she said, adding, "It is nerve-wracking."?

Meanwhile, the National Weather Service canceled tsunami advisories for Canada and Oregon.
